New Cases of Dengue Are Detected in GüinesGüines, 5 de noviembre (www.cubanet.org) - An undetermined number of people sick with dengue has been detected in Güines, a locality situated in Province La Habana, causing the health authorities to conduct an intense fumigation campaign in that locality. According to Orestes Hernández, an activist with Cuba Commission who resides in Güines, hundreds of houses are fumigated daily the majority of them located in Las Yaguas, Manuel Ascunce, La Quinta, Leguina and Chambless neighborhoods. Hernández considers that the reappearance of dengue is due to the irregular picks of garbage in Güines, where there are dumps everywhere, that contribute to the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, transmitter of the disease. The activist confirmed that besides the dengue cases there are also those of leptospirosis, a disease that has caused the death of four residents in the area in less than two months. There are still some people infected with leptospirosis admitted at the Municipal Hospital Aleida Fernández. A dengue epidemic recently compelled the health authorities to conduct a massive fumigation and garbage picks campaign on an urgent basis, but these actions are not conducted regularly due to administrative shortcomings in Cubas Health Ministry.
