Young People Charged with Drug
Use in Güines' Discotheque

By José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro (Decorum Group)

Güines, February 3, 2003 (www.cubanet.org) - An investigation for the Cuban Civic University revealed how a police operative invaded during the evening of Thursday, January 30 the premises of the popular discotheque Club Latino (Latin Club), located in Güines, a municipality in Havana Province. The police found an undetermined amount of mint liqueur bottles alleging the same contained psycho tropic substances.

According to witnesses, police units went into the before mentioned place carrying anti-drug police technology and arrested about ten young people, who were drinking the mint liqueur. Some time later, the teenagers were handcuffed and taken to Güines Police Department. Up to now, the identity of those arrested is unknown as well as the type of drug present in the liqueur.

Besides, it was known that on Saturday, February 1, during morning hours, a similar police operative surrounded a building of the micro brigade in San José de las Lajas, also in Havana Province and arrested a young woman, finding in her possession, several envelopes containing drugs. The arrested woman is the mother of a girl a few months old.

After the Government recently acknowledged the existence in the Island of an “emerging” drug market, an intense anti-drug campaign is being launched throughout the country, which has prompted the discovery of clandestine drug nets in most of the Provinces.
