- About ten opponents of Fidel Castros regime in Güines, a
municipality in Havana Province delivered last February 24 the product
of a public collection to the family of political prisoner Virgilio Marante
Güelmes, a Delegate in this locality of the Human Rights Movement
24th of February.
Miriam Marante, sister of the jailed opposition leader received from
the hands of veteran anti-Castroist fighter Jorge González Cubillas
the humble donation, consisting of food, personal hygiene articles and
money, collected due to the solidarity of 50 persons all residents of
Güines.
The best acknowledgment of the work
done by Virgilio Marante in defending human rights is to deliver to
his relatives this simple but necessary contribution of those who like
him, are struggling for the establishment of a democratic society in
Cuba, said González Cubillas, during a small reception
held in the house of Marante Güelmes family, located in
a rural area known as Ayala, distant 6 kilometers from the municipal
seat.
Leaders of several opposition organizations within the area as well
as a representation of the independent press, attended such activity,
organized to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the bringing down
of the airplanes of the humanitarian organization Brothers to the Rescue.
Virgilio Marante Güelmes was detained and arrested last December
6 when together with opponents Oscar Elías Biscet, Raúl
Arencibia and Orlando Zapata was getting ready to attend a class about
human rights which was going to be taught at a house in the capital neighborhood
of Lawton, 10th. Of October Municipality.
Marante Güelmes is presently jailed at Valle Grande jail in Havana,
charged with the alleged crime of public disorder.
