Güines' Opponents Send
Help to Political Prisoner

Güines, March 1, 2003 (www.cubanet.org) - About ten opponents of Fidel Castro’s regime in Güines, a municipality in Havana Province delivered last February 24 the product of a public collection to the family of political prisoner Virgilio Marante Güelmes, a Delegate in this locality of the Human Rights Movement 24th of February.

Miriam Marante, sister of the jailed opposition leader received from the hands of veteran anti-Castroist fighter Jorge González Cubillas the humble donation, consisting of food, personal hygiene articles and money, collected due to the solidarity of 50 persons all residents of Güines.

The best acknowledgment of the work done by Virgilio Marante in defending human rights is to deliver to his relatives this simple but necessary contribution of those who like him, are struggling for the establishment of a democratic society in Cuba,” said González Cubillas, during a small reception held in the house of Marante Güelmes’ family, located in a rural area known as Ayala, distant 6 kilometers from the municipal seat.

Leaders of several opposition organizations within the area as well as a representation of the independent press, attended such activity, organized to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the bringing down of the airplanes of the humanitarian organization Brothers to the Rescue.

Virgilio Marante Güelmes was detained and arrested last December 6 when together with opponents Oscar Elías Biscet, Raúl Arencibia and Orlando Zapata was getting ready to attend a class about human rights which was going to be taught at a house in the capital neighborhood of Lawton, 10th. Of October Municipality.

Marante Güelmes is presently jailed at Valle Grande jail in Havana, charged with the alleged crime of public disorder.
