Havana, March 16, 2005 - (www.cubanet.org) - “We alert the international community that infrahuman procedures that the Cuban Government alleges are committed at Guantanamo Naval Base are not worse than those committed daily in Güines' Provincial Jail”, peaceful opposition dissident Santiago Adrián Palomo, a member of such party. said in a recent letter sent to Ada Kaly Márquez Abascal, President of Democratic Party 30th of November.

In such letter Palomo detailed what he believes are infrahuman living conditions of the inmates and the arbitrary actions committed against him by jail authorities:

You live on top of sewage, and all roofs in the sections leak.

Inhuman and degrading treatments are constantly put in practice, such as beatings, threats, reprisals, intimidations, physical and mental tortures, violation of personal correspondence, thefts and lack of regular hygiene articles.

Medical attention is lacking, medicines are non-existent, all kind of diseases proliferate, rules about dietary supplies are not complied with: Awful cooking and preparation are below the established amount (80% of inmates are underweight).

“Just imagine sister, here authorities say that the Ministry is located in Havana, that this is the inland, the provinces, the country, giving free rein to all kind of abuses, arbitrariness, that remain, of course, more than unpunished”, Palomo said at the end of his letter.
