Rotary ClubIt was founded on September 19, 1925, although its constituent Bylaws was not issued until May 22, 1927, being its first Board of Directors a valuable group of Güineros, among them, Dr, Ramón Casas Bacallao, a dentist as President; Ernesto Fernández Arrondo, journalist and poet, as Secretary; Dr. Máximo Rodríguez Alonso, a pharmacist as Vice-President; José García Fernández, businessman, as Treasurer and José María Carrión Greck, Court Clerk, as Sergeant at Arms. This institution, whose motto was give of itself before thinking of itself, stood out as performing collective works for improvement and help, that would have an effect for Güines benefit. Its members, besides the ones before mentioned, were prominent citizens such as José Vázquez, Vicente López Ferrer, Dr. Rafael Zervigón (Fillo), Walter de Muralt, Dr. Antonio Tagle, Nicolás García Curbelo and his son Nicolás García Callejas and many others. They met once a month in regular session, at a friendly lunch in the second floor salons of Esquina de Tejas (Corner of Tiles) hotel, where local or prominent figures would be invited to get their reports or to support some collective improvement. One of the more significant activities throughout its history was to sponsor, beginning in 1956, due to Dr. Antonio Tagles idea (one of its last Presidents), the Day of the River, on the last Sunday during the month of April, in recognition of the deep impact that our Mayabeque with its large flow, has had throughout its history in the development of the local economy.
