Juan Francisco Calcagno Monti
One of the more illustrious figures that contributed to the cultural development of the Villa of Güines. Italian doctor, born in Turín on July 22, 1791. Due to health reasons he moved to Güines in 1820 establishing there his permanent residence. He published a documented scientific paper entitled Aviso sobre el cólera (Warning About Cholera) where he notified the authorities to take preventive measures against this horrible disease. Dr. Calcagno founded in 1833 a Medical Sub-Delegation in the Villa and acted as the Secretary-Director of the Permanent Health Board. He founded in Güines Santa Isabel (Saint Elizabeth) School which favored higher education, helping also to get improvements for the Villa in cooperation with Arango y Parreño. His generous giving to the community made him to be known as the poor mans doctor. He died in Güines on June 7, 1854.
