José Expósito Pernas
José Expósito Pernas
(1927-2001)

Born in Güines on March 27, 1927. He is considered as one of the more prominent modern plastic and painting artists born in the Villa of Güines.

At the beginning of the 40’s of last century, the main hall of Güines Chamber of Commerce had a bust of the Apostle José Martí, the work of this talented sculptor and as a brief description, we quote the words of the prominent man of letters from Güines José Alonso Novo, published in NEC-OTIUM, official voice of Güines Chamber of Commerce, in its issue of November-December 1943: “A very meritorious work, the product of the artistic genius of ‘Pepito’ Couso Pernas (José Expósito Pernas) where the author reveals, once more, his skill, talent and sense of beauty, that as wonderful gifts of his spirit, develops into beautiful artistic concepts in the very clear understanding of the young man from Güines.”

The artistic production of Pepe was extensive, not only in his native land but also in the United States. Among the more relevant, his bust of Francisco de Arango y Parreño, still standing in the park of his name in our Villa and that of Dr. Carlos J. Finlay, located in an interior patio of our local Health Department.

After a long professional and artistic life, José Expósito Pernas left us, passing away in New York at 73 years old, on January 7, 2001.
