Alberto R. Martell Valdés (1906-1986)

He was born in Güines in 1906. A member of an old and prestigious family from Güines, his father, Francisco (Panchito) Martell Lorenzo was a schoolteacher and Public Solicitor.

Alberto Martell was a struggling, tenacious and intelligent man, totally identified with his Güinero roots. He attended “San Julián School” of La Salle Brothers for his elementary education. He continued his secondary and university studies in Havana, where his talent and intelligence allowed him to graduate as Doctor in Civil and Public Law, also as Doctor in Diplomatic and Consular Law and also as Doctor in Philosophy and Letters.

He practiced with brilliance his law profession. He was Chairperson in “Güines High School” and in the School of Law at the University of Havana. He practiced as a Notary Public in the neighboring town of San José de las Lajas. He was a journalist and a distinguished writer, winner of various literary prizes. He was a Member of the Academy of History and an excellent public speaker.

He married Alicia Cancela Femenías, procreating a beautiful family. His links with Güines were always strong and constant throughout all of his life.

With the arrival of the Communist system, he went into exile with his wife and children, working as a teacher until his death in Miami, on April 28, 1986.
